Human Crematorium Upgrade Case Study | Swindon Borough Council

On June 1st, 2025, the unfortunate news was released that the Swindon Borough Council needed an urgent £640,000 to do some refurbishment/ replacement work on the back-end system of the three cremators on site. (https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/25199895.urgent-640-000-repairs-needed-kingsdown-crematorium/)  Due to the abatement system being offline for quite some time, the gases of all three cremators were released directly into the atmosphere via the bypass ducts, through the bypass chimney. This meant that the gases were not cleaned with a sorbent before exiting into the atmosphere. Securing the necessary funding, the council immediately reached out to multiple manufacturers via a tender process to start the various required work in stages. Stage one was to replace the three lines of ductwork from each cremator into the bypass chimney. June 18th, 2025, we received a letter from the council to confirm that we are the successful bidder for this project.

Why did Swindon Borough Council choose to partner with Addfield Cremations

During the tender we had to submit various documentation and completed evidenced projects, to proof that we are the best team for this project. We scored 93.7%, based on efficiency, health and safety practices, quality of goods and finally, price. Even though the Addfield Cremations division has not been in the market for that long, the team behind it has. The workmanship completed on similar, previous waste-to-energy plants in the last 24 months showcased excellence and quality on every point we were evaluated by.

We attended site visits with the Crematorium Manager at Kingsdown Crematorium, with our Software Engineer, Engineering Manager and Design Engineer to fully understand the extent of the damage on site. It was imperative to get a good overview of the site’s history and visuals of current state, to ensure that we include everything in the proposal to ensure that phase 1 of their works is completed effectively. Working on competitors’ cremators can be a high risk, so we left no stone unturned, because mitigating risk is essential, not just for us, but also for our end client.
