CBCE 2025 at the Utilita Bowl: A greener future for crematoria

CBCE 2025 at the Utilita Bowl: A greener future for crematoria

Electric Cremators

This year’s Cremation and Burial Communication and Education (CBCE) Conference, held at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, proved once again to be a valuable and educational event for crematoria, burial authorities and manufacturers alike. With expert-led seminars, and plenty of networking over coffee (and the occasional cheeky pastry), CBCE 2025 was both enlightening and energising.

One standout moment? Addfield Cremation Technology was proudly presented with the Bronze Greener Globe Funeral Standards Award, presented by Brendan and Carolyn Day. The award highlights Addfield’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, innovation, and raising the bar for environmental performance in the funeral sector—a proud moment!

What we gained from CBCE 2025

Beyond the awards and the networking, CBCE 2025 delivered real value with industry updates and practical takeaways. From regulatory insights to future-focused innovations, attendees left with a clear sense of direction—and quite a few action points.

We particularly valued:

  • Insights into upcoming legislation and how it affects daily operations.
  • Opportunities to connect directly with key individuals within the industry.
  • Networking with peers, manufacturers, and suppliers to share best practices.
  • Hearing how others are preparing for sustainability and emissions targets.

The Big Announcement: Statutory Guidance PGN 5/2 (25)

The headline act for many attendees came from Richard Williams, Unit Manager, and Chidiebere Igwebuike, Senior Advisor at the Environment Agency’s Local Authority Unit. During their white paper presentation, they outlined the upcoming changes in Statutory Guidance PGN 5/2 (25) for crematoria.

These changes are part of the government’s drive to improve environmental standards, and they’re set to have a major impact on both existing and new crematoria. Here’s what we learned:

Key Implementation Milestones – Existing Crematoria

RequirementTimeline
Flue gas treatment (including mercury abatement)Within 4 years from publication or operation limited to 100 hours/year
NOx monitoring and emission limit (200mg/m³)Within 4 years
NH₃ (ammonia slip) – where NOx abatement is usedWithin 1 month
MCERTS accreditation for monitoring equipment/personnelWithin 1 month
Fuel & electricity metering for annual carbon reportingWithin 4 years

For New or Replacement Cremators

RequirementTimeline
Flue gas treatment (including mercury abatement)Within 1 month
NOx monitoringWithin 1 month
NH₃ (ammonia slip) – if NOx abatement is installedWithin 1 month
MCERTS accreditationWithin 1 month
Fuel & electricity meteringWithin 1 month

We’re now awaiting the official publication date of the new guidance—which, judging by the title, is expected later this year.

Looking Ahead

CBCE 2025 left us feeling better informed, better connected, and more prepared for the challenges (and opportunities!) ahead. With the environment now front and centre in cremation regulation, the sector is stepping confidently into a greener, more accountable future—and we’re proud to be part of that journey.
